Visayas thwarts Gilas in final leg of PBA All-Star Week 2018

The Visayas All-Stars overcame a rocky first quarter and cruised to a 157-141 win over Gilas Pilipinas to cap off the 2018 PBA All-Star Week at the San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City on Sunday, May 27.

Jeff Chan, who was named All-Star Game MVP, fired 29 points to go with 7 rebounds while Jericho Cruz posted a rare triple-double of 20 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists as the Visayas natives took the fight out of the Nationals despite trailing in the maiden period.

Down by 3 after the opening frame, the Visayas All-Stars turned the tides and ended the first half with an 80-73 advantage before breaking the game wide open by leading by as much as 20 points, 138-118.

Terrence Romeo submitted 27 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds while June Mar Fajardo made his presence felt with 14 points and 18 rebounds for Visayas.

James Yap chipped in 17 points, Ronald Tubid chalked up 15 points, Greg Slaughter finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds and Chris Ross delivered 8 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds in the win.

Calvin Abueva registered monster numbers of 41 points, 27 rebounds but those went down the drain as Gilas lost two of its 3 games in the mid-season spectacle.

Matthew Wright flirted with a triple-double after registering 28 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists while Japeth Aguilar added 20 points in the loss. – Rappler.com
